The Chinese name niu-xi means “ox-knee” in reference to the somewhat swollen leaf nodes, which resemble the knee of an ox. Official in the Chinese Pharmacopeia, the root is a famous traditional Chinese herb used to nourish the “kidney and liver,” strengthen the bones to treat backaches or lack of strength in the lower limbs and in prescriptions for hypertension.
