This Asian species has slender, grass-like leaves (less than 1/4 inch wide) and without a prominent mid-rib. It grows to about 18 inches in height. Indigenous to China, Southeast Asia and Japan, several cultivars have been developed, best known to aquatic gardeners and rock garden specialists. In China, both A. gramineus and A. calamus are used interchangeably as the same drug known as chang-pu.
