Buckeye fruits were once used in very small doses (as it is considered toxic) for the treatment of spasmodic cough and asthma. Externally, used on the American frontier to treat rheumatism and hemorrhoids. The toxic ground nuts were strewn into streams to stupefy fish causing them to float to the surface for easy collection.
