Aesculus hippocastanum, Horsechestnut seed extracts are widely prescribed orally in European phytomedicine for edema with venous insufficiency for varicose veins and to improve vascular tone, help to strengthen weak veins and arteries in reducing leg edema, night-time calf muscle spasms, thrombosis, and hemorrhoids. Contains aescin, which regulates the flow of fluids to surrounding tissue. Topically, aescin-containing gels or creams are used to allay swelling and pain in bruising, sprains, and contusions. Injectable forms used in European trauma centers to help stabilize brain-trauma patients.
