Found in woodlands and moist areas in the western Rockies, American Indian groups used leaf tea for indigestion, stomach pains, colds, and as a laxative. A poultice of mashed leaves was applied to swellings. The leaves were placed in babies’ blankets for fever. An important food, fiber, and dye plant.
