Artemisinin (青蒿素 qing hao su) was first isolated by a Chinese research group in 1972. Artemisia annua is the only Artemisia species that is known to contain appreciable levels of artemisinin. Chinese scientist Dr. Youyou Tu shares the 2015 Nobel Prize in Physiology and Medicine for her contribution to the discovery of artemisinin as head of the Project 523 research group on traditional medicines for use against malaria at the Institute of Chinese Materia Medica, Academy of Traditional Chinese Medicine.
