Astragalus canadensis, Canadian Milkvetch is found throughout N. America and Siberia. The root was chewed by the Blackfeet as a poultice for cuts. Lakota chewed root for chest and back pains, also coughs. The genus Astragalus, pea family (Leguminosae or Fabaceae) is one of the largest and most diverse genera of flowering plants, with over 2,500 species of medicinal, edible, or poisonous species, such as the locoweeds of western N. American deserts.
