Bixa orellana, Annatto, Achiote, Lipstick Tree is a small tree native to Mexico, Central America and much of tropical America. The seeds have been widely used as a yellow to red dye or natural food coloring, once widely used to color margarine. The reddish pulp surrounding the seeds is separated, made into cakes, then dried. Leafy shoots a folk medicine in decoction for antidysenteric, antiseptic, antivenereal, aphrodisiac, and astringent effects.
