Calamint, Calamintha nepeta or Clinopodium nepeta subspecies glandulosum is a delicate minty fragranced perennial in search of its own identity in a sea of taxonomic confusion. This small, dainty whitish to purple-flowered herb is a nice addition to a well-drained perennial border. The herb has been added to warm baths to soothe nerves. The taxonomy associated with this plant group is so confused one cannot begin to believe anything published in the scientific literature regarding its chemistry unless an actual specimen is avaiable for reference. Evidence toward my long-held belief that much of the scientific literature, similar to a photograph, represents only a snap shot of a moment in time.
