Echinacea angustifolia is the "classic" echinacea of Eclectic medicine in the United States. This western pairie species occurs from central Texas, western Oklahoma and Kansas, north through the Dakotas and west to eastern Montana. Plains Indians are said to have used Echinacea for more medicinal purposes than any other plant group. Root (chewed, or in tea) used for snakebites, spider bites, cancers, toothaches, burns, hard-to-heal sores and wounds, flu, and colds. Science confirms many traditional uses, plus cortisone-like activity, also insecticidal, bactericidal, and immunostimulant activities. Considered a nonspecific immune system stimulant.
