Echinacea purpurea grows from two to five feet tall, often branching toward the top. The leaves have coarse pubescence. Lowermost leaves are oval to broadly lance-shaped, usually with a cordate base, and coarsely toothed with irregular teeth. Unlike other Echinacea species which have tap roots, the root of E. purpurea are fibrous as seen here.
