Eupatorium perfoliatum, Boneset, Throughwort

Eupatorium perfoliatum, Boneset, Thoroughwort above ground parts were a common home remedy of early America. Widely used, reportedly with excellent success, during flu epidemics in 19th and early 20th century by Eclectic physicians. Considered anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, immunomodulating, and antiplasmodial, among other activities. Recent research revealed by the American Herbal Pharmacopoeia confirms that the plant contains potential toxic pyrrolizidine alkaloids, which dictates limiting dosage.
