Mentha arvensis and Mentha canadensis (Mentha canadensis var. arvensis) have been considered synonomous, however Art Tucker et al. has found M. canadensis to differ in chromosome number, distribution and chemistry. Mentha arvensis, originally from Central Europe is used as a source of mint oil.
