Opuntia humifusa (Raf) Raf., (Opuntia compressa J. F. McBr.), Eastern Prickly Pear Cactus, is a widespread species in eastern North America. The pads and fruits with spines removed are edible. Preparations reportedly antioxidant, antiinflammatory; reduces blood sugar and cholesterol. Complex taxonomy; frustrating to identify even among specialists. See: L. C. Majure, et. al. Taxonomic revision of the Opuntia humifusa complex (Opuntieae: Cactaceae) of the eastern United States. Phytotaxa 290(1):001-065, 2017, who recognized 8 species in the historically broad O. humifusa complex.
