Thirty-six images of Petasites japonicus 'Variegatus', 蜂斗菜, Japanese Butterbur, Asteraceae or Compositae, Aster Family. Like its European counterpart (P. hybridus), Petasites japonicus has been traditionally used in Asian medical systems as a treatment for colds, cough, bronchitis, and asthma, among other uses. Recent research has focused on antitussive, antioxidant, antimutagenic, and neuroprotective activity of both leaf and flower extracts. It flowers very early in spring. These flower close-ups were taken on 3 March 2011 in the Arkansas Ozarks.
