Twelve images of Polygala senega, Seneca Snakeroot, a member of the Polygalaceae, the milkwort family, found from Quebec to Georgia, Oklahoma, north to most Canadian provinces. The root tea was used by native groups as an emetic, expectorant, cathartic, diuretic, antispasmodic, sweat inducer; used to regulate menses. Historically, root tea used in pneumonia, chronic bronchitis, asthma; thought to relax respiratory mucous membranes. Research suggests useful for pulmonary conditions. Roots of this North America native are used in modern Japan and Europe an expectorant for treatment of inflammation of the upper respiratory tract.
