Photos Scrophularia marilandica, Maryland Figwort, carpenter's square, late figwort, Scrophulariaceae (figwort family). Native to eastern North America, found in relatively rich woods in moist soils. Used by indigenous N. American groups as a gynecological aid, it was sold in New York in the 1850s as woman's friend, and was used to ally restlesnnes and anxiety.
