Banisteriopsis caapi, Ayahuasca, yajé, caapi was first described in 1852 by the British botanical explorer Richard Spruce (1817-1893). Spruce spent 14 years (1849-1864) exploring plants in the Amazon and Andes, collecting over 30,000 specimens. He observed and described the ceremonial use of ayahuasca among the Tukanoan indigenous people of the Rio Uaupés in Amazonian Brazil.
