The common garden cockscomb, which comes in a myriad of colors, especially red, purple, orange, and yellow is not known from the wild, but is a cultigen that has evolved in cultivation from East Asia over many centuries. The astringent flowers have been used for diarrhea. The seeds have been employed as a demulcent and astringent for painful urination, cough, and dysentery.
