Cichorium intybus. Chicory is the source of hicory root, the slightly bitter flavoring ingredient in French-roast coffees originally added during war time to stretch the coffee supply. Chicory leaves are the leaf vegetable known as endive, or if blanched-witloof; also chicorée. Chicory is a member of the Aster Family (Asteraceae or Compositae), native to Europe and weedy in North America. Like dandelion, the root is used as a diuretic and mild laxative, also a folk medicine for liver conditions and gall bladder ailments. Root may be mildly sedative. Both the root and leaves are used in modern phytomedicine for treatment of loss of appetite and dyspepsia.
