Euphrasia stricta, Euphrasia officinalis subsp. stricta, Eyebright
Euphrasia stricta, Euphrasia officinalis subsp. stricta, Eyebright, is a hemiparasitic annual member of the Orobanchaceae that gains some of its nutrients by attaching to and stealing the nutrients of plants in its habitat. Like most Euphrasia species it is used for eye conditions. It is widespread in Maine, a European species that has become naturalized. These were mostly found in my sister's mowed yard in Penobscot, Maine. Euphrasia species contain anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and antioxidant phenolic compounds, iridoid glucosides and a glycoside eukovoside, perhaps providing a basis for traditional use.
