Ginkgo biloba, Ginkgo fruits, yin-xing, bai-guo (fruits). For most of the 20th century, Ginkgos available in American horticulture are male branches grafted on to rootstock. Why? Ginkgo fruits notoriously smell like dog droppings. What’s more, if you touch the foul-odored fruits with your bare hands, you may get contact dermatitis worse than that from poison ivy. The fresh fruit pulp, and the processed seeds of ginkgo are potentially poisonous. The processed seeds are a traditional Chinese medicine primarily used in the supportive treatment of lung aiments.
