Ginkgo biloba, Ginkgo leaf production, Ginkgo leaf farming. Ginkgo leaf raw material production occurs in China, the United States and Western Europe. In the 1990s, China became a major raw materials supplier of Ginkgo. In the United States, most production is a private venture of a German/French consortium, which holds a 2000 acre plantation in South Carolina, first established in 1982. Ginkgo leaf production is treated as a row crop, with trees coppiced to stand at one to two meters. Trees are planted approximately 40 cm apart in rows one meter apart, comprising about 25,000 trees per hectare. After harvest, tree are pruned to induce branching and keep trees small enough to accomplish mechanical harvest. Harvest is from mid-August through September. Yields are estimated at between 3,000-4,000 kg of dried leaf per hectare.
