Hepatica acutiloba, Hepatica nobilis var. acuta, Anemone acutiloba, sharp-lobed liverleaf, sharplobed hepatica, acute-lobed liverleaf is found in calcareous forests in eastern North America. The flowers range from white, to pale or deep blue or violet; leaf lobe tips are acute or sharp-pointed, rather than rounded (if you use your imagination a little). Various native groups including the Cherokee and Iroquois used plant decoction for abdominal pains, as a blood purifier, for shortness of breath and other conditions. Noted as a cough medicine about 1830, it was an obscure medicinal plant until the 1880s when patent medicines promising to treat liver disease and purify the blood created an immediate demand. So great in fact, that in the year 1883, a demand for 425,282 pounds of the herb was created (and documented). Once again, the herb has slipped into appropriate obscurity.
