Hibiscus sabdariffa, Roselle, Hibiscus, a tropical member of the Malvaceae (mallow family) is grown for it's succulent bright red calyx, which is plucked in the "fruiting" period, and dried as the source of Hibiscus tea, or used fresh in tropical regions as a refreshing cooling, fruit-like vegetable or beverage. Thought to have originated in Angola, it is now cultivated in warmer regions of Egypt, various Caribbean Islands, China, and Central America. The sour fruit is well-known throughout the tropics, and dried as an herbal tea ingredient. Among numerous traditional medicinal uses, recent studies confirm blood-pressure lowering activity of extracts.
