Hyssopus officinalis, Hyssop. In European traditions, hyssop is used in combination with horehound to treat lung ailments associated with coughs and cold, as well as for asthma and bronchitis. A tea of the dried leaves is used as a gargle to treat sore throats. Externally, the herb is used to treat rheumatism, muscle aches, wounds, and sprains. Extracts of hyssop have shown antiviral effects against herpes simplex and antiinflammatory activity. Hyssop components, such as rosmarinic acid and other hydroxycinnamic derivatives are associated with antiviral, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activity.
