Woad, Isatis tinctoria or Isatis indigotica (a synonym), Indigo woad, ban len gen (root), song lan, dan qing ye (leaf) is an ancient Asian and European herb. The root is used in Traditional Chinese Medicine to cool the blood, remove toxins and soothe a sore throat. It is antibacterial and antiviral. The leaves used as a blue dye, were used as a cosmetic to darken eyebrows. The root was listed as a high grade herb in Shen Nong Ben Cao Jing.
