Myristica fragrans, Nutmeg, Mace, an evergreen tree of the Myristicaceae, one of the famous spices sought during European voyages to the East Indies from the 15th century onward. Nutmeg is native to the Moluccas and now widely cultivated in tropical regions, especially Caribbean Islands. Used as a medicinal spice in both Chinese and Western traditions, as an aromatic carminative and stomachic for diarrhea, nausea, heartburn, abdominal distention, and stomachache. In Chinese medicine it is used in combination with other drugs. Dating back to the 5th century, in traditional Chinese medicine uses include more than a dozen methods of preparation. Each preparation method results in formation of varying chemical components, thus differing medicinal action. Mace, a separate product from the same fruit is the red aril covering the nutmeg itself.
