Psychotria ipecacuanha, Ipecac or Ipecacuanha, a tropical member of the Rubiaceae (Madder family) is native to Central America and northern South America. The common name comes from a Tupi name, translated into Portuguese as ipecacuanha. The root is used in preparations such as ipecac syrup to induce vomiting, usually after accidental poisoning. It was known in Europe by the mid-17th century.
