Ribes nigrum, Black Currant

Ribes nigrum, Black Currant is native to Europe, naturalized in northeastern North America, widely cultivated in temperate climates elsewhere. According to Foster and Duke in A Field Guide to Medicinal Plants and Herbs (2014), the fruit is used in cordials for stomachic qualities. Berry extract experimentally antioxidant, antibacterial, antiviral, anti-inflammatory and chemopreventive. Black currants have been suggested for hypertension and other cardiovascular disease, neurodegenerative disorders, kidney disorders and diabetic neuropathy. Seed oil a dietary supplement supplying essential fatty acids, including gamma-linolenic acid (GLA).
