Vanilla planifolia, Vanilla orchid. Vanilla planifolia and Vanilla popona are cultivated as commercial sources of vanilla "beans". Vanilla is one of the most popular flavors. As much as half of vanilla consumed in the U.S. is used in ice cream products. In several cultures, vanilla is regarded as an aphrodisiac and stimulant. Used by the Aztecs since ancient times, the plant originates in northern latitudes of the American tropics.
