Ziziphus jujuba var. spinosa, Ziziphus spinosa, Suan Zao, Suan Zao Ren, Sour Date, Sour Jujube, Wild Jujube, 酸枣. The seeds of Ziziphus jujuba var. spinosa, a wild variety which is common in the mountains on the outskirts of Beijing, is the source of the traditional Chinese drug suan-zao-ren. It is widely used in China as a sedative and hypnotic. Excellent results have been reported from the use of the seed extract insomnia. On a trip to Beijing in 1988, suffering from severe jetlag and insomnia, I used the extract of suan-zao-renas a sleep aid with excellent results. The seeds are official in the Chinese Pharmacopeia.
